A Day in the Life

Today I had to take the Craigerator to the urgent care, as he has been wheezing something fierce. He’s bee bopping around as usual, pink cheeked and perky, and also has a high squeaky Minnie Mouse voice and breathes like Darth Vader right now. When we got there, we had to wait for a bit for our turn. He walked around the waiting room naming shapes – square, circle, sphere (!). “We learned ’bout shapes at school today!” he squeaked. Then he asked “what rhymes with Bylinder? CYLINDER!” and tried to find a cylinder. A couple of college aged girls began to comb through the room for a cylinder. “We’ve gotta find this kid a cylinder.”

Tonight Jack saw me looking a little worn down as I tucked him in, and he talked me through some blues. ‘What did you have that was sad today? How did it make you feel? Did you have anything good happen today you can feel happy about?’ I did have kind of a crappy day, to be truthful – doing work with a not particularly nice person, who was (true to form) not particularly nice. But my “happy” thing was that I went to the eye doctor and had my eyes checked, and my close vision is deteriorating (FORTY!), and I got some really super cute glasses which will be here soon and then I will be able to SEEEE and also be cute.

I cut the boys’ hair yesterday with clippers. And it doesn’t look horrible? The littler boys’ front forelocks are a touch jaggedy and too short, but I’ll get better at it.

Took Liam on some errands this weekend. He had to go to Costco with me – and we stopped by Walmart to get the aforementioned clippers. But our very first stop was at the local plant nursery, where we got a pot for his plant that had outgrown its terrarium. He pondered thoughtfully, before walking up to another customer and asking him the price and details on a certain terra cotta selection. The guy sweetly helped him locate the price (written in Sharpie on the inside), and we went on our way to the counter, where they keep a live bunny by the cash register. He gave her some nose scritches as they rang up our purchases.

I’ve been drinking a pot of Rishi tea every evening. It’s loose leaf and I put it in a little mesh ball and let it steep in a fancy ceramic pot and it’s so good. Most tea I find to be too harsh. These teas are peppery, layered, yummy. They smell amazing. I’m quite enjoying this new routine. I purchased several $2 small packs, to try a bunch of different ones. I’m drinking Orange Blossom right now and it’s amazing – fragrant, smooth.

I’ve also joined a gym near work. It is a funky, weird place, in existence since 1872 (in its present crumbling-mansion-style building since the 1920s). An Olde Tyme Gentleman’s Club (long since integrated), with a pub, a library, a study room, a white-and-black tiled pool. It is spread over about 25 different rooms, over perhaps 6 or 7 floors, with a dozen or more small narrow staircases leading to rooms that apparently were purpose-built to be a gym, but look like the mansion from Great Expectations. It’s incredibly convenient to work, and it has a dry sauna and a hardcore Pilates studio and a full on boxing ring.

Been listening to Dax Shepard’s podcast, Armchair Expert. Highly recommend – it’s a lot of fun! Also watching The Good Place. And reading Game of Thrones. Squeezing all of this into the cracks of the day, of course, but making my way through all three.
